You can also visit the Old Melbourne Gaol Museum. This former jail housed notorious criminals and minor offenders for over 87 years. Ned Kelly was executed here, saying, “Such is life.”
The museum displays information on former inmates and the staff. The skull of Ned Kelly, who was hanged in 1853, was once displayed in this place. However, the skull was stolen in 1978. The museum was subsequently opened to the public as a museum in 1957. It tells the story of the infamous prison, and displays death masks of those executed at the site. A skull belonging to Ned Kelly, who was convicted of murder and hanged on a tree, was also displayed. Sadly, the skull was stolen in the 1970s and has never been recovered.
